The history of the museum park dates back to 1876, when a botanical garden was founded by the Nature Friends Association. It was the first public botanical garden in the territory of the Czech Republic established as a result of a civil initiative with an intention to raise the public awareness of ornamental flowers, shrubs and trees. Before the museum was built, the municipality had bought the land out from the Nature Friends Association and donated it to the museum’s curators; the Nature Association consequently opened a new botanical garden located at its present whereabouts.

Dnešní umístění dřevin v muzejním parku nemá s původními dispozicemi moc společného, protože při stavbě budovy muzea původní zahrada zcela zmizela pod několikametrovou navážkou. Kolem roku 2001, kdy se pod muzejním parkem podél Vítězné ulice budoval podzemní depozitář, došlo k výrazným změnám – bylo vykáceno několik vzrostlých stromů, po dokončení prací pak byl prostor nově osázen a park byl celkově obohacen o spoustu zajímavých druhů. Mezi nejvýznamnější exempláře patří například letité domácí druhy (buk lesní, smrk ztepilý) vysazené patrně při výstavbě muzejní budovy či z dendrologického hlediska vzácný smrk východní, starý více jak sto let, smrk ajanský, dub červený, borovice limba a cypříšek nootecký. Liberec jako „město rododendronů“ zde připomínají starší kultivary této okrasné dřeviny.
The placement of shrubs and trees in the museum park today has little in common with the original layout of the garden because it was entirely buried under several meters of backfill. Major changes were made around 2001 when an underground depository was built underneath the museum park along the Vítězná Street – several mature trees were cut down and once the works were completed, the park was replanted with plentiful new, interesting species. The most important ones include aged native species (European beech, European spruce) which were probably planted during the construction of the museum building; or rare species, such as an over a hundred year old Caucasian spruce, Ezo spruce, northern red oak, Swiss pine and Nootka cypress. Older cultivars of rhododendrons remind visitors that Liberec is nicknamed the Rhododendron City on account of those ornamental plants.
