The North Bohemian Museum’s library was probably established as early as 1873, as an inherent part of the museum (at that time called Nordböhmisches Gewerbemuseum in Reichenberg).

Digital library
The manuscripts and old prints from the North Bohemian Museum’s archive collections have been digitized

The manuscripts and old prints from the museum’s archive collections have been digitized. Historical documents of the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec can be accessed via Manuscriptorium, a European digital library network. Thanks to grant aid from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic we have been able to make selected documents from our collections accessible on-line. Historical documents have been fully digitized in AiP Beroun s.r.o. digitisation centre according to the Digital Document Definition for the purposes of preservation, accessibility and permanent storage in the VISK 6 sub-scheme.

Manuscriptorium is a freely accessible digital library which enables ready access to concentrated information on historical resources via sophisticated search tools. The objective of the project is to provide access to existing digital content via integrated tools in order to make it as readily accessible as possible. The digital library therefore aggregates documents from many renowned institutions, extending beyond the countries of the European Union.

Mittheilungen and Zeitschrift des Nordböhmischen Gewerbemuseums

„Mittheilungen des Nordböhmischen Gewerbemuseums“ (North Bohemian Industrial Museum News): the magazine was published in 1883–1905. Its periodicity ranged from 4 to 12 issues per year. It gradually transformed from a newspaper supplement into a modern museum magazine of European standard intended for both the general public and experts. In 1906–1914 it was published under the name „Zeitschrift des nordböhmischen Gewerbemuseums – Neue Folge“

News and interesting facts

The library of the North Bohemian Museum is one of the oldest libraries of its kind in Europe; it is also the oldest continually operating library in Liberec. Since 1873, the library’s collecting policy has focused on applied arts, visual arts, architecture and history. The library has been used by technical school students and craftsmen as well as the Liberec public. A new building of the museum then offered a generous space to the library where it has been situated to this day. The growing collection of books and periodicals is not used only by the museum staff, but offers other unique uses for anyone interested in research. Today, the library collection consists of several sections in parallel with the specialist departments’ activities. It houses books and periodicals totalling approx. 70,000 volumes.

Since 2002, the museum library has been recorded by the Czech Ministry of Culture in the Register of Libraries, reg. No. 2184, as a library housing a specialised collection.
